Erased Bach is a collection of “Chorales” each printed on a separate page of
statement-size paper. These make up a modular piece which can be newly assembled
by the performer(s) with each performance. The number to the left of each Chorale
corresponds to a real chorale by J.S. Bach taken from Charles Sanford Terry’s edition of
the Complete Bach chorales (1929).
Extracted from this collection are only those chords which accompany the word Gott,
as they sound the moment when they are uttered.
Erased Bach is my largest work to date and it is a modular piece consisting of 266 modules. They are numbered 1-405 however as they correspond to those 4-part chorales by J.S. Bach which weren't erased completely. It was premiered by Forest Moody in seven excerpts spread across two concerts at
the Symposium for Electronic Interfaces and Controllers for Keyboard Instruments (2025), in Vienna Austria.
Excerpt 1: Chorales 18 and 19
Excerpt 2: Chorales 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
Excerpt 3: Chorales 92, 193 and 255
Excerpt 4: Chorales 265, 288 and 355
Excerpt 5: Chorales 187, 188A, 188B and 188C
Excerpt 6: Chorales 401, 402, 403 and 404
Excerpt 7: Chorale 405
